What the……. is a doula? And do I really need one?
Doula is a word that comes from ancient Greek times, it meant to be a servant/slave to women. However, a doula is no longer seen to be a salve to women but a birth support worker. A doula is someone who assists and supports other women and their families during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I often joke a doula isn’t something you knew you needed until you had one.
People always say to me “Oh you must love babies to be a doula?”. My answer is sure, I like babies, but what I love more and what I’m truly passionate about is supporting women and their families entering parenthood. I believe a supported mother and partner means a well-loved and cared for baby.
Dr John Kennell, a famous pediatrician who was also a huge advocate for doulas spent researching the positive benefits of doulas mothing the mothers. He is known for the quote “If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.”
I believe everyone should have access to a doula. We are there to support and walk alongside your family during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. I am your birth-educated friend, here without judgment to support your hopes and dreams for your family’s future. Because I am trained in physiological birth, I can help you with finding up to date evidence-based resources to help make informed decisions during this time and I will help advocate for you if the need arises.
Not only am I here for you emotionally but also physically during your birth and I will help you and your partner cope with the intensity of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I am not just there for the birthing Mum, but I’m here for the birth partner and extended family. Another benefit of having a doula is knowing that I am not going to be offended by anything you say during labour and I know when to back away without getting my feelings hurt..... Unlike some family members during what is a very emotionally charged time.
Each doula is unique in what they offer and it’s important to find one you feel fits in with your values, hopes and dreams. You are inviting this person to be part of your team at one of the most life-changing events, so you MUST be 100% comfortable with them.
